This activity responds to standards for advancing cultural awareness and collaborating across cultures to construct knowledge. Students from different countries use teleconferencing and other social networking techniques to investigate and construct knowledge resources on topics of international significance such as: Transmigration, Bilingualism, Worldwide e-Communities, e-Books, Global Warming and Rainforest Destruction. An excellent source for controverial topics is the International Debate Association (IDEA). Go to the IDEA Home page and their list of topic. Your class might also be asked to develop a collaborative tutorial in which case you will work on a topic related to the design of Educational Technology.
Cosider a collaborative learning activity that will involve students in working in a group to collect, organize, analyze and express information.
The topic should be related to the content area that at least some members of the group aspire to teach.
For collaborations centering on the design of instruction, consider a topic that is managable and could be taugh in a few minutes.
For topic invloving sociocultural awareness, consider topics that would engage students in discussion of current social issues in their community.
If you are collaborating with an international group, consider topics that are comparative in nature and allow group members to contribute their own
unique local perspectives to global issues.
Sample topics for an international Social Awareness activity include: food, family, traditions, holidays, entertainment, comedians, economics, careers, global climate change, environmental protection, tourism, pop culture, poverty, diseases, music, musicians, sports, athletes, habitation, natural disasters, evolution of langauges, accessibility for individuals with disabilities, different cultures, and languages.
