Collaboration and Community

Communication is key in today’s classroom. Learners must be able to collaborate and communicate effectively in their classroom communities. Group work, exploration, and discussion of findings is key to the learning and development process. Some learners have greater success with this than others. To help foster these skills, educators can provide supports and roles to the members of collaborative groups, groups should be flexible rather than static, teach and encourage positive behavior and interaction among peers, provide guidance and prompts for asking questions and gathering information, and establish expectations for group work.
